Death shortly after birth. Neuron-specific deletion within the first 3 weeks after birth is lethal in 75% of animals. Surviving animals show accumulation of neurofilament proteins in neuronal soma, age-dependent sensory neuron degeneration, loss of large caliber axons, and hind limb paralysis with a stronger effect on sensory neurons compared with motor neurons. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12682084}. |
