12367 P70677 CASP3_MOUSE Caspase-3 (CASP-3) (EC 3.4.22.56) (Apopain) (Cysteine protease CPP32) (CPP-32) (LICE) (Protein Yama) (SREBP cleavage activity 1) (SCA-1) [Cleaved into: Caspase-3 subunit p17; Caspase-3 subunit p12] DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE Lethality; the majority of mice on the 129/Svj background die in utero or within weeks of birth because of many extra cells within the brains of these animals (PubMed:8934524). Defects are caused by impaired apoptosis (PubMed:8934524). Mice lacking Casp3 on the C57BL/6J background are viable (PubMed:16469926). Mice lacking Casp3 and Casp7 on the C57BL/6J background die immediately after birth because of defective heart development (PubMed:16469926). This suggests that Casp7 can partially rescue Casp3 in certain conditions (PubMed:16469926). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16469926, ECO:0000269|PubMed:8934524}.
